10 Most Beautiful Places in New Jersey
Photographs and text by Walter Choroszewski

Tillman RavineTillman Ravine, Stokes State Forest, Sussex County

Consisting of over 15,000 acres that straddle the Kittatinny Ridge in the northwestern corner of Sussex County, Stokes State Forest qualifies as one of my favorite locations. But Tillman Ravine, a small area within the forest, deserves special attention. It is a natural gorge featuring a series of waterfalls on Tillman Brook that tumble down the steep western slope of the ravine toward the Delaware River. A short walk from either of the two parking areas will lead you to a magnificent scene that seems to have been magically transported out of the Pacific Northwest. Rugged rock outcroppings, towering hemlocks, and delicate flora surround a wild mountain stream that has spent the last 10,000 years carving this awesome ravine.
